![]() ![]() ![]() ‘We have no hesitation in calling her pencil perfect,’ wrote the Times Literary Supplement in 1904. Potter is unusual among British artists and illustrators in the perennial popularity of her work and enduring critical acknowledgment of its value. Towards the end of her life she suggested that the impulses to paint and to write were coeval: ‘I do not remember a time when I did not try to invent pictures and make fairy-tales - amongst the wild flowers, the animals, trees and mosses and fungi - all the thousand common objects of the countryside.’ The measure of the best of her paintings is their impact when viewed without their familiar accompanying text. Much of Potter’s art has a narrative quality - appropriately, given how many of her paintings (whatever their original purpose) ultimately illustrated her stories for children. In the many hundreds of watercolour paintings she completed before her eyesight began to worsen in middle age, she balanced romance with an unaffected sincerity born of her lifelong excitement in the natural world. ‘Everything was romantic in my imagination,’ Potter once wrote. As in the animal paintings of Landseer, albeit Potter’s work as storybook illustration lacked Landseer’s instinct to grandeur, her vision of English wildlife included both heroism and poetry. ![]() Although privately she sometimes tired of rabbits, she remained loyal on the printed page. Like Jane Austen, whom she admired, Potter confined herself to a narrow canvas. Potter stood her rabbits on two legs, she provided them with clothes, handkerchiefs, teapots and, in the case of old Mr Bunny, a sharp little switch, but unlike earlier illustrators she insisted that they remain rabbits, her chief focus anatomies that were very different from the human figure (which she never fully mastered). to describe her as ‘Author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, &c’ on the title page of subsequent stories. The astonishing, instantaneous success of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, published in 1902, encouraged publishers Frederick Warne & Co. Rabbits overwhelm the posthumous reputation of Beatrix Potter, who was born 150 years ago next year. In both cases the subjects of Potter’s art were rabbits. By the end of the decade she had made good her promise: her first Christmas card designs were published by Hildesheimer & Faulkner in 1890 in the same year her illustrations to doggerel by Frederic Weatherly marked her first sortie into print. ‘It shows what a woman has done,’ she reassured herself. Although a painting by Angelica Kauffman stiffened her resolve and bolstered her confidence, the statement was one of intent above conviction. She did not identify the ‘something’ she had in mind, but it almost certainly referred to art. It was March 1883 and 16-year-old Potter, still mostly confined to the nursery of her parents’ house in South Kensington, had made a second visit to the Winter Exhibition of old masters at the Royal Academy. ‘I will do something sooner or later,’ wrote Beatrix Potter in the secret diary she kept in a private code. ![]() ![]() Unlock new special powers to control the fight more effectively. Modern BattleTech is more approachable than ever.Įven if you’ve never encountered the tabletop game before, there’s a good chance you’re at least aware of BattleTech’s setting through the various video game adaptations that have been knocking around since the ‘80s. Probably a good thing for a wargame setting, really! While there are conventional tanks, infantry and so on, the focus is on 12-metre-tall (give or take) BattleMechs, powered by fusion engines and stuffed with as much weaponry and armour as their 20 to 100-ton frames can carry. Containing around 2,000 habitable planets which were once united as the Star League, there are now a bunch of factions duking it out for territory and resources. Set roughly a thousand years from now, humanity has colonised a chunk of our galaxy known as the Inner Sphere. There is an overwhelming amount of background material available for BattleTech, but the core is pretty simple. The release trailer for BattleTech's video game adaptation At the same time Catalyst Game Labs, the game’s current steward, has spent the last few years releasing a range of products that make the game more approachable than ever. As a result, the game has decades of fiction, sourcebooks and miniatures that are all as relevant as the day they were first produced. My initial encounter with BattleTech was the fourth-edition box released way back in 1996 and, while not quite as far in the dim and distant past as my first forays into Warhammer, the game I played then was pretty much the same as it is now. It wasn’t a hard sell I make no secret of my love for giant robots, and it’s not the first time I’ve played the game. I’ve recently gotten into BattleTech in a big way after a regular gaming pal dragged me in. If you’re tired of three-year edition cycles and regular sweeping rules changes, I have the perfect game for you: BattleTech. While I’m very excited for the release of Warhammer 40,000: 10th Edition, it’s still annoying that a bunch of books on my shelf are going to be completely invalidated, and I really feel for the Astra Militarum and World Eaters players who will get less than a year’s use out of their codices before the new edition drops. ![]() ![]() It's all such a big secret what Apple does to your photos after you entrust them to their messy Photos App. The photos appear to be randomly located in various random folders with random names. Lastly, what happens to your photo and video files when you import them is also a mystery! The "package" of your library (if you open it) is very complicated. You can't trim them and keep the original. You can't edit your photos and your videos like you do on your iPhone or iPad! There is an edit button, but it does a lot less than on the mobile devices! Crazy. All of the above, combined with a very slow and buggy database and combined with the extremely low speed of the iCloud for uploading, makes your life miserable and messes up even your corrected photos.Because otherwise you'll get tendonitis from right clicking, selecting Get info, typing the date and time on the window, clicking ok, and clicking the next picture or video, for each and every one of the hundreds or thousands you might have! You can't simply grab all the videos from your daughter's birthday and make their dates equal to your daughter's actual birthday! No! You have to edit them o.n.e.-b.y.-o.n.e. No batch-edit of dates: Given the above huge bug, Photos app doesn't even give you the chance to correct the mistake! You can't batch-edit a number of videos (or photos for that matter). You import your lifetime's videos in Photos and you realise that your whole life lasted no more than one second! Everything happened the exact same date and time: Today and now! Dates in imported videos are always ignored and the current date is applied to all of them: You change the file creation dates before you import the files, you change the file modification dates, heck you even use special utilities to change the EXIF and metadata whatnot dates, but no. ![]() Sorry, but this app is not at all Apple! I will attempt to make a list of the issues and bugs that I encountered, but right now what is most urgent is the first: I couldn't wait to use my new full-extra MacBook Pro 16'' to add all my past photos and have a complete and ordered library, until I started using this very problematic Photo app. ![]() ![]() If you're already committed to services like Spotify or Apple Music, Google Play Music Desktop Player probably won't convert you. Although you still want to be careful about where you enter your Google account password, since a new project manager isn't automatically trustworthy. So if he abandons the project, someone else can hypothetically pick it up. However, GPMDP is also open-source, with its source code available on Github. So he's not obligated to keep updating it, and his interests may change. The app and your use of it are completely free, because it is a student project.īecause the app is a student project, its future is unclear: Samuel Attard began developing GPMDP as a teenager, in college, as a freely available engineering project, rather than a product he intended to make money off of. Three, there is no attempt to make a financial transaction. We know more about him than we do about the people who make Google Play Music, itself. He prominently displays his full name, physical appearance, place of residence, multiple methods of contact, and even where he goes to college. Two, the app creator, Samuel Attard is not anonymous. If you try to access your Google account from within GPMDP, you actually get redirected to an external web browser window. One, the app is mostly acting as a front end for the Play Music website, so it can't intercept your log-in info. But we know that we can make an exception for GPMDP for a few reasons. You may be leery about using your Google account password in the app: It's healthy to be skeptical when a non-official app asks for your password. The unofficial Desktop Player app is the only way for Play Music to replicate a function that Spotify users have enjoyed for years. ![]() You need a Chromecast, Nexus Player, or other officially supported device. How is this different from just using Google's mobile app to cast to a local device? Surprisingly, the official app doesn't let you cast to your computer, even if you have Play Music loaded in a Google Chrome browser tab. So your compatible smartwatch can use the app, too. You get music controls, playlists, search, and the ability to play specific songs, plus the app is compatible with Android Wear. Making it a permanent resident of the UI can help alleviate some anxiety about accidentally removing a song from your library, and it's also a better reminder that your trash is automatically emptied after 60 days.Ī free remote player mobile app for Android: As its name implies, Remote for GPMDP is a free Android app that interacts directly with the Desktop Player, over your local Wi-Fi connection. The Trash section exists in the web version of Google Play, but you can't see it unless there's something in it. You can set the Player app to open when you start your computer, enable voice control, use a mini player widget, link the app to a Last.FM account, create keyboard shortcuts for a variety of common actions, and even try out experimental support of 5.1 surround sound. The additional features are welcome and sensible: While the visual design of GPMDP is nearly identical to the web version, you'll notice a few additional items when you click on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner, chiefly "Desktop Settings" and "Trash." Clicking on Desktop Settings opens up a whole new layer of functions and interaction. Its advantages come in what it can add to the experience, rather than attempting to alter what's already working. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel: Play Music doesn't have a bad interface, so why fix what isn't broken? For the most part, Google Play Music Desktop Player (GPMDP) seeks to mirror the look and feel of the in-browser experience, for maximum familiarity. Have Play Music fans been missing out by not having a Spotify-like desktop experience? Let's investigate. Generally speaking, Google's mobile services come from a kaleidoscope of individual apps, but us lowly Windows and Mac users get corralled into a web browser tab when we want to load up Gmail, Drive, Photos, Maps, and so on. ![]() Although Google Play Music (GPM) competes directly against Spotify and other streaming services, it actually doesn't have its own desktop app. ![]() ![]() ![]() Events included swordplay workshops, a country trek, a kubb tournament, puppeteering, a ghost hunt, a 'Trading Post' (dealers' den), music and storytelling. If Perseverance makes it down safely, the robot geologist will be poised to possibly answer one of the most profound questions in modern science: Are we alone? Or did life, however primitive, manage to evolve on another world and, by extension, might it exist on countless other worlds across the cosmos? Hence the familiar references to "seven minutes of terror." Looking for signs of past life Jezero Crater offers one of the best places on Mars to look for signs of past microbial life - but it's also the most challenging landing spot NASA has ever attempted to reach on Mars.Īnd it will all be over, one way or the other, in just seven minutes, well before flight engineers receive signals confirming the start of atmospheric entry. ![]() From atmospheric entry to touchdown in Jezero Crater will take about seven minutes, ending with the rover being lowered to the surface by a rocket-powered "sky crane" backpack.īecause of the 127-million-mile gulf between Earth and Mars, it will take radio signals, relayed through NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, 11 minutes to reach anxious flight engineers at JPL.Īs a result, the success or failure of the rover's seven-minute descent will depend entirely on its ability to figure out exactly where it is in relation to its landing target and autonomously adjust its course as required to avoid steep cliffs, boulders, sand dunes and other mission-ending hazards.
